New Neighbours, New Opportunities

Some 180 participants from 22 ICCJ member countries, geographically ranging from Northern, Central and Eastern Europe to Israel, Latin America and Australia will gather at Manchester Town Hall on Sunday July 1 attending the opening session of ICCJ’s 2012 conference on “New Neighbours, New Opportunities, the Challenges of Multiculturalism and Social Responsibility.

A warm welcome will be extended to the excellent audience by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Elaine Boyes, Bishop Nigel McGulloch of Manchester - the Chair of the British Council of Christians and Jews and this year’s conference chair - and by representatives of the Manchester Christian and Jewish communities. ICCJ President Dr. Deborah Weissman will add her opening remarks, framing the topic of this conference in the whole of ICCJ’s activities.

And then will follow three fully packed conference days with each day a key note speaker. On Monday Clive Lawton – UK, co-founder Limmud-, on Tuesday John Denham – UK, Member of Parliament and parliamentary private secretary to the Leader of the Opposition- and on Wednesday Kwok Pui Lan – Hong Kong, Professor at the Episcopal Divinity School. Each key note will be followed by two responses and – after a short time for buzz groups – questions from the floor.

The conference offers a wide range of no less than 25 workshops in 5 workshop sessions. The Southampton University’s Parkes Institute, the Woolf Institute from Cambridge, the Manchester University’s Center for Jewish studies, the ICCJ and the U.K. Council of Christians and Jews being responsible for one workshop session each. ICCJ’s International Abrahamic Forum and ICCJ’s Young Leadership Council will present one workshop during each of the five sessions.

Added to all this the program also offers five outings to places of interest in the Greater Manchester area on Tuesday afternoon, a social event with kosher dinner at King David School and last but not least a gala dinner at the grounds of Manchester United Football Club to conclude the conference on Wednesday evening.

We are looking forward to meet many of you in Manchester.
